The North East Derby was won by Sunderland. Regis Le Bris' side beat regional rivals Newcastle 1-0 in Premier League round #16. It was the first meeting between the two teams in the English Premier League since 2016.
The only success of the match was the own goal scored by Nick Woltemade in the 46th minute. The German striker scored in the wrong goal, and scored an own goal at the beginning of the second half, following a header.
Sunderland – Newcastle 1-0 » Nick Woltemade's own goal made the difference at the “Stadium of Light”
Although there is an extremely strong rivalry between the two teams, the match did not live up to expectations, with scoring opportunities being extremely rare.
In the first half of the duel at the Stadium of Light, there was not a single shot on goal. Sunderland were the more dangerous team, but without much achievement in attack. Instead, the derby atmosphere was palpable and 'centre' Bankes showed yellow cards to Brobbey and Mukiele in the first half.
The second half started with Nick Woltemade's spectacular own goal. Nick Woltemade intervened and headed the ball into his own goal on a cross from Mukiele. Ramsdale was caught on the wrong foot by the German's execution and was beaten after the ball also hit the crossbar. Newcastle woke up and started to make a run for an equaliser, but the efforts of Eddie Howe's men were to no avail and Sunderland walked away with the three points.
With these three points, the newly promoted Sunderland remains at the top of the ranking, in 7th place, but by the end of the stage it can drop to 8th place. Newcastle is not as well in the ranking. “Coțofenele” are in 12th place in the Premier League, with 22 points obtained in 16 stages.
