President Nicușor Dan rejected the speculations that the defeat of Cătălin Drula in the elections for the Capital City Hall is also his defeat, saying at the same time that the mandate itself “is more important than the vote” even if “Romanians invest a lot of energy at the time of the elections”.
In a press conference in the French capital, on Tuesday evening, after the meetings with the French president and the mayor of Paris, Nicușor Dan was asked by Romanian journalists what he expects from the new general mayor of Bucharest, Ciprian Ciucu, but also what he thinks about the theories according to which the results in the capital can be interpreted as his defeat.
“Generally speaking, I think that you, the media, and the Romanians invest a lot of energy at the time of the elections, moments that are emotional, and much less energy in following, in fact, democracy is the fulfillment of the mandate by the elected, the mandate that the people gave by voting, and the mandate is more important than the vote, but, saying that, a defeat for me would mean that no one would welcome me in Europe or that we would not enter the OSCE, or something like that. things, not at all what happens in some local elections in Bucharest”, answered Nicușor Dan.
The president said the city where he won two mayoral terms in 2020 and 2024 still faces “structural” problems.
“Mr. Ciucu has a mandate. Bucharest's problems are structural, precisely because for 25 years the Capital City Hall has not had adequate funding and has not been able to invest in large infrastructure projects. This money has gone to various works on sectors, parks, fences, pansies, curbs. I, as I have already said, want that referendum from the end of last year to be put into practice, so that the mayor Let Bucharest have all the power that a vote gives it. The people of Bucharest said, “we want it to be Mr. Ciucu”, very well, let's give the mayor general the money and the authority to sign the urban plan so that he can manage the city”, declared President Nicușor Dan.
