Mircea Lucescu, the Romanian national team and former coach of Beşiktaş, reacted immediately after the news that the match TurkeyRomaniathe play-off semi-final for the 2026 World Championship, will be played in Istanbul, at Beşiktaş Park, the stadium of his former team.

Mircea Lucescu praised the approximately 42,000-seat stadium on which Romania will play its chance to reach the final tournament in 2026. The match was scheduled for March 26, 2026, from 19:00.

“It's a part of my soul there! It was the only team among the big ones in Istanbul that won the championship when it turned 100 years old. It is an exceptional stadium, after it has been restored. It's something incredible, with an extraordinary sound system”, Mircea Lucescu told GSP.ro.

He managed to win a title with the Istanbul team in the 2002-2003 season, exactly 100 years after the birth of the club. Beşiktaş is one of the biggest clubs in Turkey: 16 titles, 11 Turkish Cups and 10 Super Cups.
