Timofey Gryadochnik
On this day the church honors the memory of the blessed prince Dovmont of Pskov (in holy baptism Timothy). In Rus', this saint was nicknamed the Gardener, since his holiday fell during active work in the garden. In particular, in the northern regions they began to plant cucumbers on Timofey. “Timofey has come – bring the cucumbers quickly,” people said.
It is interesting that they usually tried to do this work secretly – this was especially true for the first bed. The first cucumber that grew was also supposed to be picked as quickly as possible and buried in a secret place. It was believed that if someone outside saw the first cucumber, then all the vines would soon wither.
In warmer areas, cucumbers had already sprouted by the day of Timofey Gryadochnik. At this time they looked to see if the lashes were turning yellow. If this happened, they said that it was the result of the evil eye of unkind neighbors. Other signs of this day are also associated with cucumbers. A large harvest of this vegetable foreshadowed an abundance of cones on the fir trees.
