US President Donald Trump criticized the EU's $140 million fine on Elon Musk's social media platform X, and then expanded his criticism, accusing Europe of “going in very bad directions”, reports AFP.
“Europe has to be very careful. (They're) doing a lot of things. We want to keep Europe Europe,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
“Europe is going in bad directions. It's very bad, very bad for people. We don't want Europe to change that much. They're going in very bad directions,” the US leader added.
Europe, also criticized in the new American security strategy
Europe is also criticized in the new US national security strategy released last week, where it is described as over-regulated and threatened with possible “civilisational extinction” due to migration.
According to the strategy, the Trump administration will “cultivate resistance to Europe's current trajectory within European nations.”
The Kremlin welcomed the changes brought by the new strategy, saying on Saturday that they were “largely in line” with Russia's vision.
After X was fined for breaking EU digital rules, Elon Musk said the community block should be “abolished”. Brussels dismissed the claims as “completely crazy”.
“I don't think it's fair,” Trump said when asked about the fine.
“Elon didn't call me to ask for help on this,” the US president added.
