This holiday is dedicated to the anniversary of the consecration of the Church of the Great Martyr George the Victorious in Kyiv. One of the most famous posthumous miracles of St. George is the killing of a serpent with a spear that was ravaging the land in Beirut. As the legend says, when the king’s daughter was given to the monster to be torn to pieces, George appeared on horseback and pierced the snake with a spear. The image of the saint at this moment is known to many.

In Rus', Yuryev (George, Egor) day was of great importance, since on this day (as well as a week before and a week after) peasants could move from one landowner to another. Boris Godunov put an end to this custom, but his memory remained – for example, in expressing regret about lost freedom: “Here’s to you, grandmother, and St. George’s Day!”

On this day, it was customary, when going somewhere on business, to serve a prayer service for well-being on the upcoming journey. Also, before Yegori, it was necessary to pay off all debts, otherwise you could live your whole life as debtors.

To predict the weather, they went to listen to the water in the wells. If no splashing or rustling was heard from the well, they expected a calm winter. If there were ripples in the water, this foreshadowed blizzards and blizzards.

In Rus' they used to say: “We have two Yegors – the hungry one (May 6) and the cold one (December 9).” By this day, they tried to cover all the doors with felt or matting, caulk the windows and cellars so that the frost would not penetrate into the hut.

Yegor was considered the lord of wolves and guardian of livestock. It was to him that they prayed that predators would not attack domestic animals. They said that on St. George's Day, wolves begin to go for prey. “What the wolf has in its teeth is what Yegori gave,” people said. The bears, on the contrary, from that time on fell asleep in the deepest sleep in their dens.
