“We cannot accept the threat of interfering in European politics.” Critical message from the EU summit to the US national security strategy

European Council President Antonio Costa said on Monday that while it is normal for the United States and the European Union not to share the same vision on many issues, the threat of interference in domestic political life is not acceptable, writes Reuters.
The US national security strategy, released on Friday, aimed to “cultivate a resistance to Europe's current trajectory within European nations”, a remark criticized on Monday by Antonio Costa, the president of the European Council.
“What we cannot accept is the threat to intervene in European politics,” he declared.
Costa pointed out that the view of freedom of expression is different in the EU and in the US, for example.
“There can be no freedom of expression without freedom of information,” he said at an event.
“There would be no freedom of speech if citizens' freedom of information was sacrificed to defend the technology oligarchs of the United States,” Costa said.
What the US strategy says
The White House has officially published the country's new security strategy in which it talks about a European “economic decline” and a possible disappearance of European civilization.
The document accuses European officials of obstructing US efforts to end the war in Ukraine, saying governments are ignoring a “vast European majority” that wants peace.
The document highlights the ideological chasm that has been created between Washington and its traditional allies, describing a European continent where “economic decline is eclipsed by the real and harsher prospect of the demise of civilization.”
“The major problems facing Europe include the activities of the European Union and other transnational bodies that undermine political freedom and sovereignty, migration policies that are transforming the continent and creating conflict, censorship of free speech and suppression of political opposition, a drastic decline in the birth rate, and a loss of national identity and self-confidence,” the Trump administration said in the document.

The new security strategy also provides a clear ideological alignment between US President Donald Trump's populist MAGA movement and nationalist parties in Europe.
The US administration – which has developed increasingly close relations with far-right parties in countries such as Germany and Spain – appears to be suggesting it could help ideologically allied European parties.
In a direct challenge to the EU, the document states that America should “cultivate resistance to Europe's current trajectory within European nations.”
“America is encouraging its political allies in Europe to promote this revival of spirit, and the growing influence of European patriotic parties indeed gives reason for great optimism,” the strategy states.
“American diplomacy should continue to defend genuine democracy, freedom of expression, and the unreserved celebration of the individual character and history of European nations,” the strategy states.
The fine imposed on X and the US charges
On Friday, transatlantic relations were further strained by the fine imposed on Platform X by the European Commission.
The $140 million fine imposed on billionaire Elon Musk's Platform X underscores how Europeans are undermining U.S. policies while demanding U.S. military protection, a top U.S. diplomat, Marco Rubio's deputy, wrote on Saturday.
“The countries of Europe cannot look to the US for their own security while undermining US security through the (unelected, undemocratic and unrepresentative) EU,” said US Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Landau.

Landau thus joined Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other US officials in criticizing the fine imposed by the European Union on the X platform, owned by Musk, which it considers to be a tool of censorship.
But Landau went further than Rubio, citing broader ideological and strategic concerns.
Landau posted on X that differences between the EU and the Trump administration on many issues undermine the idea of a partnership with the United States despite the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Musk has also placed himself at the forefront of attacks on Europe, calling for the eradication of the EU – a request with which former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev immediately agreed.
EU officials said the measures taken to hold tech companies accountable protect users against deception, scams and misinformation, and said Company X's status as a US company had nothing to do with the decision to impose a fine.
