A commune in Botoșani has been run by the same family for two decades. The position of mayor was held, in turn, by the father, the mother, the father again, and now by their daughter, following Sunday's election.
The PSD candidate, Andreea Cristina Alecu Gireadă, obtained the most votes (41.54%) in the partial local elections for the position of mayor of the Mihai Eminescu commune in Botoșani county, according to the provisional final results centralized by the Permanent Electoral Authority.
The candidate of the liberals, Ionuţ-Cristian Sigartău, collected 25.70% of the votes. The turnout at the polls was 44.19%, that is, 3,268 people voted out of the 7,383 registered on the permanent electoral lists.
Andreea Cristina Alecu Gireadă is the daughter of the former mayor of the locality, targeted by a DNA file for bribery, according to Monitorul de Botoșani. He signed a plea agreement because he took the rope.

According to the local media, the commune has been run by the Gireadă family for 20 years. Verginel Gireadă was elected for the first time in his native commune to head the mayor's office in 2004, a position for which he was re-elected until 2012.
Then he was sentenced with a suspended sentence for falsely appropriating a piece of land and could no longer run for mayor. because the punishment stipulated that he could no longer hold the position held at the time of the crime, Adevărul noted in 2013.
Because the judiciary did not suspend his right to vote and be elected, he ran for and won the parliamentary elections, which took place in the fall of that year. At that time liberal, in the period 2012-2016 he was a deputy, elected during the USL period.
Aneta Gireadă, the wife of the former mayor, was the head of the commune for two terms, in 2012 and 2020, for two terms. In 2020, Verginel Gireadă obtained a mayoral mandate with the support of the PNL. Later, in 2024, he was re-elected from the PSD side, according to Objective de Suceava.
He admitted to stealing, including a car
According to DNA, between July 2022 and March 2025, he requested and received bribes five times to favor certain companies, which later won public contracts. The former mayor chose construction materials worth over one million lei, which he used to renovate his house and other homes of his relatives. According to the prosecutors, he also admitted that he also received a car worth more than 20,000 euros and the sum of 200,000 lei.
Through the plea agreement, he received three years in prison, with the suspension of the execution of the sentence under supervision for a period of 4 years, as well as with the prohibition, for a period of 3 years, of the rights to be elected to public authorities or to any other public positions and to occupy a position involving the exercise of state authority.
The anti-corruption prosecutors also stated that, in view of the special confiscation, the seizure of the sum of 20,000 lei, taken from the defendant, and the non-disposal of the sum of 1,309,262.23 lei in the account of the former mayor were ordered.
Andreea-Cristina Alecu-Gireadă, publicly endorsed by the PSD deputy Marius Budăi, declared, on Sunday, at the exit from the polls, that she will continue the projects started by the former administration, that is, by her father.
