“Cambodian troops opened fire with small arms and indirect weapons at approximately 05:05 a.m. and continue to fire into the present. The Thai side responded in accordance with the rules of engagement, using small arms and indirect weapons,” the statement reads. A spokesman for the Thai army also said that “the Thai side is using aircraft to attack military targets in several areas in order to suppress the Cambodian attacks.”
Reuters reminds that this is another recent increase in tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. The border dispute escalated into a five-day war in July, which ended with a ceasefire agreement brokered by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
