Folk calendar

Mitrofan's Day

On this day, the memory of Mitrofan of Voronezh is celebrated, a bishop of the Russian Church who lived in the 17-18 centuries and canonized.

Based on the weather on Mitrofan, Russian people predicted the weather for the summer. If there was light snow on that day and the wind was blowing from the north, then cold rain should have fallen on June 6.

On Mitrofanov's day they organized festivities – they collected flour from all the houses and baked pies. After this, the feast began, usually accompanied by various games. On this day they celebrated the establishment of a sleigh track in the snow.

In addition to Saint Mitrofan, Saint Alexander Nevsky, the great Russian prince and commander, was honored. In the 13th century, during the time of Alexander, Rus' was attacked from three sides at once – the Catholic West, the Mongol-Tatars and Lithuania. Throughout his life, the prince did not lose a single battle, and moreover, he showed diplomatic talent more than once.

On the day of memory of Alexander Nevsky in Rus', they remembered the fallen soldiers and wondered about those who went to war. To do this, three buns were baked, in one of which a cross was placed, after which they were laid out around the house: one on the threshold, another on the bench, the third on the shelf near the icons. If a bun with a cross appeared on the threshold, then the soldier would soon return home, but if it was near the images, then he might not return at all.
