George Simion, elected for a new term at the head of the AUR, said on Sunday at the party's National Congress that he will be “a softer president than some expect, but more demanding than ever”. He criticized the current government and said that his party must “alternative for all areas”.
Simion claims that his new mandate as president of the AUR begins “in a most uncertain situation”.
“I am starting my second term, as president of AUR, in a situation that is as uncertain as possible. In 2026, anything can happen, from being arrested, to forming a government with AUR, a government in which Romanians have high, high hopes. You can expect anything and the same is the situation in the modern society we are facing. We have to take care of everyone, from those who work the land and today are scared from the tax that comes over them, on warehouses, on blankets, on solariums, up to those who want to perform in fields such as blockchain and artificial intelligence”, said George Simion, at the end of the congress organized near Alba Iulia.
He said that AUR must also think “about the student who cannot buy a home”, but also “about the old man abandoned by the authorities who no longer has hope”.
“We must be the alternative for all areas. For this we need work, for this we must grow and discipline ourselves, for this we must first professionalize ourselves, for this we must believe in the justice of our mission and in victory,” added the AUR leader.
“The Romanian people will take care of our opponents”
George Simion said the current rulers “are the past” while AUR represents “the future”.
I told you about our opponents, the Romanian people will take care of them. They are the past and we are the future (…). Please, dear friends, let us focus on ourselves and on the implementation of our program for Romanians. We will not do what they did and are doing, political repression, and we will not fight with their dirty weapons. We must be focused on each collective and on the voice of the Romanians, who will return to their natural motherland once we win. We must focus on achieving prosperity for all citizens of this country,” said George Simion.
The AUR chairman said he would be “more demanding than ever”.
“I promise you one thing, I will be a gentler president than some expect, but more demanding than ever. It is not a time for crying. It is not a time for lamentation. It is not a time for relaxation. It is a time for fighting and I know that, through you and the other AUR members, I have with me some fighters who will win for Romania!”, the leader of the opposition party also declared.
George Simion, the only candidate registered in the race, was elected for a new term as president of the AUR, with 991 votes out of 1,108 cast. A total of 17 people voted against. The congress near Alba Iulia was organized six years after the founding of the party.
