In the train hit by a construction crane on Wednesday morning in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, there were approximately 195 people, the authorities said, who also announced a first toll of the victims, according to the BBC.
The train traveling from Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, to the northeast of the country derailed and caught fire after being hit by a crane working on a high-speed rail project. The fire has been extinguished and rescue operations are underway.
The local police reported that 22 people died and 79 others were injured in the incident. Eight of the injured have serious injuries.
Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phipat Ratchakitprakarn ordered a “thorough and comprehensive investigation” into the cause of the accident.
