The Prahova County Council declared, on Sunday, that the Ministry of the Environment and the institutions subordinate to it “allowed and coordinated the maintenance works at the Paltinu reservoir under the conditions when the levels in the lake were low”, and “the assurances offered then that the supply of drinking water would not be affected proved unfounded”.

CJ Prahova claims that “he treats the drinking water situation in the Câmpina area as a major emergency, which directly affects the lives of over a hundred thousand inhabitants”.

“The President of the CJ requested the urgent convening of an operative meeting tomorrow, at 3:00 p.m., at the Paltinu Dam, with the participation of the management of Apele Române, ESZ Prahova and ISU, to clarify the technical situation and to establish the immediate measures necessary to resume the supply of drinking water under safe conditions”, the statement reads.

CJ Prahova criticizes the Ministry of the Environment

The institution headed by Virgiliu-Daniel Nanu criticized the decisions taken by the Ministry of the Environment, headed by Diana Buzoianu, and subordinate institutions.

“The cause of the crisis is directly related to the decisions of the Ministry of the Environment and its subordinate institutions, which allowed and coordinated the maintenance work on the Paltinu reservoir in conditions where the levels in the lake were low. The assurances offered then that the supply of drinking water would not be affected proved to be unfounded, and the increased turbidity of the water made it impossible to treat it to legal parameters, which led to the cessation of supply for tens of thousands of people”, more claims CJ Prahova.

CJ Prahova said that together with the local institutions “they continue to do everything that depends on them to mitigate the effects of the situation: the distribution of drinking and household water, the addition of reserves, the placement of tanks in the field and the permanent coordination of interventions”.

What the MAI said about the cause of the Paltinu crisis

In a statement on Sunday in which it presented the measures established by the National Committee for Emergency Situations, the MAI said that the support actions come “as a result of the significant drop in the water level in the Paltinu reservoir, determined by the preparations for hydrotechnical works at the dam, as well as the high turbidity caused by hydrological phenomena.”

“These conditions led to the interruption of drinking water supply in 13 localities in Prahova and one locality in Dâmbovița, affecting more than 107,000 inhabitants,” the MIA also declared.

In a message on Sunday evening, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated that, “after the most urgent resumption of water supply, those who generated this crisis downstream of the Paltinu reservoir must answer for the shortcomings created”.
