Trump-Putin summit will only take place in Budapest – Szijjarto

Szijjártó said that Orbán’s negotiations with Putin lasted three and a half hours – “much longer than planned.” They discussed Hungary's energy supply and the acceleration of construction of the Paks nuclear power plant.

The Russian Telegram channel “You listened to Mayak” published a video with part of the official meeting, in which the illegitimate president of the Russian Federation spoke about the likelihood of a meeting with the American leader.

“Donald said: “You have a good relationship with Victor, I have a good relationship with Victor.” And he suggested Hungary as a platform for negotiations. We happily agreed. If it comes to using the Budapest site, I will be happy about it,” Putin said.

Context

Trump announced on October 16 that he intended to hold a meeting with Putin in Hungary. He did not announce a summit, but noted that negotiations at the level of foreign ministers are planned before this.

First, on October 20, a telephone conversation took place between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The next day CNN reported that the Trump-Putin meeting may not take place as planned and that the Rubio-Lavrov meeting likely won't happen either. The Russian Foreign Ministry, in response to CNN's news, stated that “it is impossible to postpone what has not been agreed upon.”

On October 22, Trump announced that he had canceled the summit with Putin in Budapest, but, according to him, they will meet in the future. On the same day, the US Treasury imposed sanctions against the Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil.
