Matveev day

On this day, the memory of Matthew Levi, one of the twelve apostles, the closest disciples of Jesus Christ, is celebrated.

In Rus', on Matvey (Matthew), if there was a thaw on that day (which was a fairly common occurrence), people joked: “Winter sweats on Matvey: she appeared in a white fur coat, hoping for November.” They also said: “The earth is rotting on Matvey,” that is, it becomes wet from the melted snow.

If violent winds blew on that day, then the blizzards and blizzards were supposed to continue until St. Nicholas the Winter. If the clouds were low, cold weather was expected.

Despite the strict fast, on this day the peasants loved to visit each other. The table, of course, was fast, but the modesty of the meal was compensated for by the sincere conversations. “It’s bad for Matvey if he didn’t treat the guests,” people said.
