The series of insults that Donald Trump has launched against some journalists in the last month continues. The US leader on Thursday offended a reporter who asked him about the control of Afghan immigrants, following the shooting of two members of the National Guard, according to the New York Post.
“Are you stupid? Are you a stupid person?”, Trump said to an American journalist who asked him Thursday, at his residence in Florida, about the control of Afghan immigrants in the United States.
The journalist's question was asked in the context in which two National Guard soldiers, a man and a woman, were shot near the White House on Wednesday, apparently by an Afghan citizen who arrived in the United States after the hasty withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan in 2021. The woman died, and his colleague was in “serious condition” on Friday.
She asked Donald Trump why he was blaming his predecessor, Joe Biden, since some members of his own administration had said that the resettled Afghans had been carefully vetted.
“Because they let them in,” Trump replied, waving a photo of a US military plane full of people fleeing Kabul in 2021 as the Taliban regained control of power. These refugees came “along with thousands of other people who shouldn't be here, and you're only asking questions because you're a stupid person,” the White House leader said.
Trump's slip on Thursday is one of a series of insults to some female journalists. The US president became angry last week when ABC News journalist Mary Bruce asked several questions during the US leader's meeting with the crown prince of Saudi Arabia at the White House.
The ABC reporter asked Prince Mohammed bin Salman about the violent death of a Washington Post columnist at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in 2018. The US Secret Service said the attack was carried out on the prince's orders.
“You don't have to make fun of our guest by asking him a question like that,” Trump told journalist Mary Bruce, later calling her question “horrible, insubordinate and just plain terrible.”
Two weeks ago, aboard Air Force One, he interrupted Bloomberg News reporter Catherine Lucey when she tried to ask him why he had not yet released the Epstein files.
“If there is nothing incriminating in the files, sir, why not…” Lucey began to say as the president answered questions aboard Air Force One, according to The Daily Beast. Before the reporter could finish the question, however, Trump pointed his finger at her and said, “Shut up! Shut up, piggy!”
