At least 13 people died in a fire that engulfed high-rise buildings under renovation in the northern part of Hong Kong, and 16 people were seriously injured, the AP reported on Wednesday. People are still trapped in the buildings.


The flames are consuming bamboo scaffolding erected in all eight blocks of the densely built housing estate. There are still people trapped inside.
A firefighter was among the fatalities. According to sources, at least eight women were among the remaining 12 dead.

The fire broke out in the eight-high-rise Wang Fuk Court housing estate in the Tai Po district. The buildings accommodate nearly 2,000 people. apartments, inhabited by 4.7 thousand people.
The spread of the fire was facilitated by bamboo scaffolding placed outside the 30-story buildings under renovation, the BBC reported. (PAP)
