“The elasticity of the skin is determined by two proteins – collagen and elastin. If there are enough of them, the skin can shrink along with a decrease in volume. If there are few of these proteins, it loses its elasticity and begins to sag,” the trainer explained.
Boyko noted that the amount of collagen and elastin is influenced by genetics, the amount of protein in the diet and the rate of weight loss.
“The faster you lose weight, the less likely it is that your skin will have time to tighten. The body needs time to rebuild the structure of the skin,” he added.
What to do to prevent skin from sagging
- Monitor the quality of your diet and eat enough protein, which is the material for the synthesis of collagen and elastin.
- Take vitamin C, without which the process of collagen production does not start.
- Drink enough water. When dehydrated, the skin loses its elasticity.
- Engage in physical activity. Movement improves blood circulation, which means it accelerates metabolic processes in the skin, helping it recover.
- Do strength training. During weight loss, muscles take up the space where fat used to be. This helps to avoid emptiness under the skin, which means it reduces the risk of sagging.
