Folk calendar
Rodion and Erast, Rodion Icebreaker
On this day, the Orthodox Church commemorates six of the seventy apostles, including Erast and Rodion.
In Rus', on this day, peasants brought bread and a large piece of salt to church for consecration, and then gave them to the cattle – this was supposed to give the animals health. This tradition was so strong that even when purchasing a cow, the buyer could demand from the former owner, in addition to it, a piece of bread blessed for Erast and Rodion.
Special signs were associated with the birth of children. If the sun was shining on Erast, then they said about the child born on this day that everything would be fine in his life – luck, strength, and intelligence.
By this time, ice had formed on the rivers, but it was still fragile and could break under the feet or runners of the sleigh. That is why Saint Rodion was called Icebreaker. They also said: “Rodion will come and take the man to the full.” This meant that it was impossible to overcome water obstacles either on ice or water. However, strong ice should have appeared soon. “Expect a strong infusion from Erast,” people advised.
The weather that day was unpredictable, but rarely pleasant. “He is ready for everything: cold, hunger, and a roadless snowstorm,” people noted. If there was particularly bad weather that day – with rain, sleet, strong wind, blizzard or frost – you had to go out onto the porch and bow to winter so as not to be angry with people.
