Roskomnadzor began blocking WhatsApp* in Russia

November 29 11:18
Roskomnadzor has begun a phased blocking of the WhatsApp* messenger in Russia. The decision is related to systematic violations of the law recognized as extremist on the territory of the Russian Federation by Meta Corporation.
The department explained that the messenger continues to be used to organize “terrorist actions,” “recruitment,” and fraudulent schemes against Russians. Roskomnadzor recommends users switch to domestic messengers, writes Sever-Press.
Let us add that the leading region in terms of the number of complaints about the work of WhatsApp* was the neighboring Novosibirsk region. According to Om1 Novosibirsk, since November 25, users have encountered problems sending and receiving messages.
Previously Chairman of the Duma Committee on Information Policy Sergei Boyarsky said that the decision to limit access to calls on Telegram and WhatsApp* had justified itself, the number of fraud cases had decreased “by several times.”
*Meta, which owns WhatsApp, is recognized as an extremist organization in Russia and is banned.
