From the report of the Central Statistical Office entitled “Working in the field of culture in the European Union and EFTA countries in 2024” shows that last year in the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) 8.3 million people worked in the field of culture, including 7.9 million people in EU countries. A generally larger share of the population worked in the cultural field in northern rather than southern European countries, and in western rather than eastern Europe, the report noted.

In 2024, in EU countries, 4 million people working in the field of culture were men and 3.9 million were women. In 16 out of 30 countries analyzed, more women than men worked in the field of culture. The report shows that 62.3 percent cultural workers in the EU are people with higher education. Moreover, those working in culture more often have higher education than those working in general (38.6%)..

The area of ​​culture is characterized by a relatively high percentage of self-employed people (31.7%), especially among artists and writers. For the total working population, this percentage was 13.6%. People working in the field of culture also have a lower percentage of people working full-time (75.5%) and on an open-ended contract (81.9%) compared to the total number of people working.
