The accident took place in the night from Wednesday to Thursday in the parking lot of a medical center in Cordău, Sânmartin commune in Bihor county.
“Unfortunately, the event resulted in the death of one person. A car and three pedestrians in the parking lot were involved in the accident: two people in wheelchairs and a nurse”, reported ISU Bihor, quoted by News.ro.
The emergency call was received in the ISU Bihor dispatch center around 11:30 p.m. Crews from the 1 Mai Guard and Oradea Detachments 1 and 2 were quickly sent to the scene, with a heavy extrication vehicle, a first-aid vehicle, a SMURD ambulance accompanied by an emergency doctor and the Mobile Intensive Care ambulance.
“Firemen intervened to extricate and provide first aid to an 18-year-old young man, who was in a wheelchair and trapped under the car. He was taken in a very serious condition, being included in a medical code red. The other person in a wheelchair, a 27-year-old man, was found without vital signs, and the doctors declared him dead on the spot. The third victim, a 32-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries”, stated ISU Bihor.
The probable cause of the accident
From the first information, the driver confused the pedals when parking the car.
“From the investigations carried out by the traffic police, on the spot, it was found that a 51-year-old woman from the municipality of Satu Mare, Satu Mare county, while driving a car, under conditions to be determined from the investigations, at the time of the parking maneuver of the car, would have mistakenly pressed the accelerator pedal instead of the brake, and the car started moving from the spot. Thus, it would have entered the alley pedestrian street located on the right side of the hospital, where he hit three pedestrians, namely a 28-year-old man from the town of Alesd, Bihor county, an 18-year-old man from Hunedoara municipality, Hunedoara county, both in a wheelchair and a 32-year-old woman from Drăgești commune, Bihor county”, said the spokesperson of the Bihor Police, chief commissioner Alina Fărcuța, according to the local publication Bihon.
The 18-year-old and the nurse were transported to the hospital for investigation and medical care, according to the cited source.
The result of testing with the breathalyzer of the driver showed that she was not under the influence of alcoholic beverages.
