“I just signed the law to make the Epstein file public!”the American president wrote in a long message on his Truth Social network, once again accusing his Democratic opponents of hiding the truth, writes News.ro.
However, it remains uncertain how much information will be revealed.
The text voted in Congress on Tuesday gives the Justice Department one month to make available all the unclassified documents it holds about the New York financier, who died in prison in 2019 before his trial for sex crimes, about his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence, and about everyone involved in related legal proceedings.
The Epstein case returned to public attention in July, with the Justice Department and FBI saying they had nothing more to say publicly about the investigation, although Trump and senior officials had previously suggested they would declassify information about the Epstein case.
Trump's friendship with Epstein continues to reverberate through American politics, as the disgraced former financier had ties to numerous influential figures in the US and abroad.
The president's dramatic shift in attitude came after it became clear the bill would pass the Republican-controlled House, most likely with substantial support from his own party. In recent days, Trump has gone from open opposition to statements of indifference.
“I DON'T CARE!”he wrote in a social media post on Sunday. “All I care about is the Republicans getting back ON TOPIC.”
Speaking from the Oval Office on Monday, Trump said he did not want the Epstein scandal to “detract attention” from his administration's accomplishments and described the case as “a prank” ANDand “a problem of the Democrats”.
