“Great complementarity”

Political friction between the United States and its southern neighbor mainly results from differences in trade policy, disputes over tariffs and border issues. They were particularly visible during periods when Washington adopted a more protectionist stance. Additionally, there were disagreements over immigration enforcement and security cooperation.

As Mexican economist Alfonso Munoz, quoted by the New York Times, noted, “there is a great deal of complementarity between the economies of Mexico and the United States. […] “Mexico is still a major supplier and has now become a major buyer.”

Mexico is the main trading partner of the USA

According to the NYT, Mexico's growing middle class and strong demand for American meat, grains, fuel and steel have reinforced this trend. Geographic proximity, efficient logistics and labor advantages further mitigated the impact of global tariffs. At the same time, Mexico remains a key exporter to the USA, supplying, among others, machinery, cars, electronics, medical equipment and agricultural products.

U.S. imports from Mexico this year totaled $354.9 billion, surpassing the figure for the same period in 2024.

— Mexico is the main trading partner of the United States, said Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard. He pointed to record foreign investment of almost $41 billion and expectations that economic ties will continue to strengthen.
