High-speed railways in Poland. Will ticket prices increase after the acceleration?

There are ongoing discussions about the speed of trains on the new Igrek line, which is to connect Warsaw through the Central Communication Port with Wrocław and Poznań. According to plans, the route is to be ready by 2035. The previous government assumed that trains there would reach a speed of 250 km per hour, however, the current authorities aim to increase this value to 320 km per hour.

As noted by “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna”, previous assumptions were intended to enable the production of trains by Polish companies, as well as to ensure more frequent connections with smaller towns, such as Sieradz or Kalisz..
Patryk Wild, author of the concept of railway spokes leading to the CPK, points to a significant increase in energy consumption at higher speeds. According to him, traveling at a speed of 320 km per hour. means as much as 80 percent. higher energy consumption, which may affect ticket prices.
However, the Law and Justice government does not intend to change its plans. According to “DGP”, PKP Intercity has already started consultations on the purchase of 20 trains adapted to run at a speed of 320 km per hour. Janusz Malinowski, president of PKP Intercity, announced that the tender for new trains will be announced no later than in December.

Representatives of the CPK company, including Mikołaj Wild and Piotr Malepszak, reassure us that that high-speed trains do not have to mean more expensive tickets. However, the key condition is the opening of the market to competition, which is already happening in Spain. Four carriers operate there on high-speed rail routes, which allows ticket prices on long routes to be reduced by up to half compared to the Polish Pendolino.
Will the vision of faster railways in Poland collide with financial realities? We will have to wait for the answer, but it is already clear that the topic arouses many emotions.
