Amazon loses in the EU court. The US giant announces further fight

On Wednesday, a European Union court rejected Amazon's appeal, reported Euractiv, a European news website. To be considered a VLOP, a platform must have at least 45 million monthly users in the EU, which the committee said was the case with Amazon.
Amazon disputed this decision, arguing that DSA's strictest requirements – such as transparency obligations, cooperation rules and data access – violate fundamental company rights such as the freedom to do business in the EU.

The company now has two months to appeal the ruling. Amazon confirmed to Euractiv that it plans to do so. “The Amazon store, as an online trading platform, does not pose any such systemic risk. It only sells goods and does not disseminate or amplify information, views or opinions,” said the spokesman.
Euractiv recalls that another e-commerce giant, Zalando, also had its application to be recognized as a VLOP rejected by EU courts for similar reasons.

Digital Services Act – what is it?
The Digital Services Act is an EU law that regulates the operation of large online platforms, such as social media, shopping websites and search engines. Its main goal is to increase user security and transparency on the Internet.
The document states that companies must respond faster to harmful content, such as hate speech, fraud or illegal products. However, this does not mean censorship – the point is to ensure that materials that break the law are removed more efficiently and that moderation decisions are clear and can be challenged.

The DSA also requires users to be informed why they see certain ads and gives them the opportunity to limit online tracking. The largest platforms must conduct regular risk assessments to check whether their activities do not harm society, for example by spreading disinformation.
The document also strengthens the position of consumers by requiring online stores to better verify sellers. The whole idea is to make the Internet more secure, fair and predictable for all users.
Amazon is a trade giant
Amazon is one of the largest technology companies in the world, which started as an online bookstore and over time transformed into a global concern offering a huge number of products and services. The company was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 and quickly gained popularity thanks to convenient online shopping and a wide selection of goods.
Today, Amazon operates not only as an online store, but also as a provider of cloud services through Amazon Web Services, which support the operation of thousands of companies and applications around the world. The company is also investing in artificial intelligence, logistics, robotics and smart home solutions such as the Alexa voice assistant.
Amazon is known for its extensive network of warehouses and advanced delivery systems that allow parcels to be delivered even on the same day. At the same time, the company is sometimes criticized for working conditions in logistics centers and its strong market position, which affects competition.
Amazon is constantly expanding its operations, entering the entertainment industry by producing films and series and offering the Prime Video streaming platform. Its development shows how the Internet can change the way we buy, work and use technology.
