The head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, met in Moscow on Monday with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, in what represents the first public event in which the Russian minister participates in person in the last three weeks, writes the Spanish news agency EFE.

Lavrov, who has not attended any public events since his visit to Minsk on October 28, welcomed the Indian minister at the reception house of the Russian Foreign Ministry, noting that it was the sixth meeting between the two this year.

“Your visit is very timely, considering the Russian-Indian summit that will take place in the capital of India in just three weeks, next month,” Lavrov said, according to Agerpres.

The head of Russian diplomacy took the opportunity to emphasize the “intense political dialogue” between Moscow and New Delhi, as well as the cooperation between the two countries in various international platforms.

Jaishankar, for his part, welcomed the opportunity to discuss international conflicts with his Russian counterpart and indicated that they would particularly address the war in Ukraine.

A few hours before, Lavrov had a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.

Last week, the Russian foreign minister, whom some media blamed for the cancellation of the summit between the Russian and US leaders in Budapest, held an unexpected video press conference.

On that occasion, Lavrov, who has been in charge of Russian diplomacy since 2004, adopted a conciliatory tone towards the White House.

Speculation about his possible fall from grace arose after Lavrov did not attend an extraordinary meeting of Russia's Security Council called by Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss Moscow's resumption of nuclear tests more than two weeks ago.

In addition, it was learned that Lavrov will not lead the Russian delegation to the G20 summit to be held at the end of the month in South Africa.

In recent years, the head of Russian diplomacy has always attended international events, including the recent UN General Assembly, instead of Vladimir Putin.
