Several laboratories of the Weizmann Institute of Science in the Israeli city of Rehovot have been badly damaged or even destroyed by a burst of Iranian ballistic missiles, The Jerusalem Post reports.

One of these was the laboratory of Professor Eldad Tzahor, world leader in the field of cardiac regeneration and director of the cell and molecular biology laboratory, active in the field of regenerative medicine. His laboratory was completely destroyed.

Another laboratory that was destroyed belonged to the researcher Dr. Leeat Yankiewicz-Keren, a veteran scientist in the Faculty of Biology, specialized in cancer research, whose collective consisted of 12 scientists.

Its research focuses on studying the interactions between tumors and the immune system using multiplexed imaging and the development of computational tools to deduce the organization principles of tumor immunology.

The Institute says no employee or student of it was injured during missile blows

The Institute also transmitted that several buildings on his campus were damaged, but no one was injured.

“The Institute is in contact with the relevant security and emergency agencies and takes all the necessary measures to ensure the safety of the employees and the campus,” said the spokesman of the Research Institute.

On the social networks there was a video recording that shows the moment when one of the rockets hits a building of the Institute.

Professor Tzahor published a message saying that “it is hard and painful, because nothing left to save.”

“We study regenerative medicine – so we will regenerate, rebuild and restore. One of my students said:” The only thing that has not disappeared is our motivation “. He thanked friends from all over the world who have provided their support, help and space for continuing his research.

After a postdoctoral internship at the Harvard University Medicine Faculty, Tzahor returned to Rehovot to investigate new cardiac regeneration mechanisms following mammal lesions – a major challenge in current biomedical research.

Weizmann Institute was founded before Israel State

The Weizmann Institute for Science is a public research university in Rehovot, established in 1934, 14 years before the founding of the Israeli state. Unlike other Israeli universities, it offers postgraduate diplomas exclusively in the exact sciences and exact sciences.

The Institute is a multidisciplinary research center, which has about 3,800 employees – scientists, postdoctoral scholars, doctoral and master students, as well as scientific, technical and administrative staff working within the institution.

Starting with 2019, 6 laureates of the Nobel Prize and 3 winners of the Turing Award, considered “the nobel for computer science”, are researchers associated with the Institute.

He and the Israeli armament company Elbit Systems have collaborated in various projects, including the development and provision of the space telescope for the Ultra -Stated Israeli program (ultraviolet astronomy satellite of transient phenomena) and in the research of materials inspired by biology in defense applications.
