Apple is stepping up efforts to plan succession at the top of the company, preparing for Tim Cook's resignation as chief executive of the tech giant as early as next year, the Financial Times reported on Friday, according to Reuters.
John Ternus, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, is considered by many to be the most likely successor to Cook, according to several people familiar with the discussions, cited by the FT.
Apple did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
The British paper cited people familiar with discussions inside the iPhone maker who said the company's board and executives had recently stepped up preparations for Cook to hand over the baton after more than 14 years.
Apple is unlikely to name a new chief executive before its next financial report in late January, which covers the critical holiday period, the FT notes.
Cook became chief executive in 2011 after Silicon Valley legend Steve Jobs resigned, ending his reign at the tech giant he co-founded in a garage.
