The head of the Romanian diplomacy, Oana Țoiu, announced on Friday evening that she spoke on the phone with her counterpart from Kiev, Andrii Sybiha, and that she “underlined the special attention that Romania pays” to the reform of the Ukrainian education system.

She specified that one of the topics addressed was the situation of the Romanian high schools in Chernivtsi.

“We clarified that, although some phases of the educational reform involve local proposals, the final decision on the number of high schools will not ignore the legitimate needs of our community. We emphasized the special attention that Romania gives to the implementation of the ongoing educational reform in Ukraine and our requirement that it protect the needs of the Romanian-speaking community in terms of access to education in their mother tongue,” said Oana Țoiu, in a post on the X platform.

The minister says he indicated to his Ukrainian counterpart “the primary importance of taking into account the legitimate demands and expectations of the Romanian-speaking minority in Ukraine.”

“The reform must ensure adequate opportunities for learning in the mother tongue for people who belong to the Romanian minority. They legitimately expect that their national identity will be preserved and protected,” added the head of Romanian diplomacy.

Other topics addressed were Ukraine's accession to the EU and “ways to make the aggressor pay”, Oana Țoiu also specified, who described the sanctions introduced by US President Donald Trump against Russia as “an extremely necessary and effective tool on the path to peace”.

What the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs said

The head of Ukrainian diplomacy declared, also in a post on X, that the telephone dialogue he had with his counterpart from Bucharest was a “substantial” one.

“I briefed my counterpart on Russia's intensification of attacks against Ukraine and our critical infrastructure. We focused on the main themes of our bilateral cooperation, common security challenges in the region and the implementation of the agreements reached during last week's conversation between our presidents,” Andrii Sybiha said.

He mentioned that he also spoke with Oana Țoiu about “the Romanian national minority in Ukraine and its rights to education”.

“I reaffirmed that Ukraine's approach remains open, good-neighborly and based on mutual respect and partnership with Romania,” concluded Minister Andrii Sybiha.
