In 2024, the number of enterprises operating in biotechnology and nanotechnology increased; expenditures also increased – according to the report of the Central Statistical Office published on Friday entitled “Biotechnology and nanotechnology in Poland in 2024.”

Central Statistical Office data show that in 2024, 246 enterprises operated in biotechnology – over a quarter more than last year. In turn, internal expenditure incurred by enterprises on biotechnology activities amounted to nearly PLN 3.3 billion and increased by 38.1% annually. – from what almost all (95.8%) were internal funds of enterprises.

275 entities were involved in research and development (R&D) activities in biotechnology, i.e. 15% more than in the previous year. more than a year ago, of which 62.2 percent were entities from the enterprise sector.

Internal expenditure on R&D activities in biotechnology increased by 7.1% annually. – up to PLN 1.8 billion. As reported, internal expenditures of entities belonging to the enterprise sector and the higher education sector amounted to 59.5%, respectively. and 37.7 percent this amount, while the share of entities from the government sector together with the sector of private non-commercial institutions amounted to 2.8%.

Over 8,000 people were involved in R&D activities in biotechnology in 2024. people (like last year) – nearly three quarters were researchers.

Moreover, in 2024 the number of enterprises that conducted nanotechnology activities increased (to 88 – 6% more than a year ago). In turn, 150 entities conducted research and development activities in nanotechnology – slightly more (2.7%) than a year ago.

Internal expenditure on nanotechnology activities increased – to PLN 433.3 million (11% more year-on-year). However, internal expenditure on R&D activities in nanotechnology decreased slightly and amounted to PLN 368.3 million and was by 3.2%. lower than in the previous year.

More than half (57.4%) of internal expenditure on scientific research and development in nanotechnology was the higher education sector.

According to data from the Central Statistical Office, for almost three-quarters (70.5%) of the surveyed enterprises, the dominant area of ​​application of nanotechnology was nanomaterials.

In 2024, over 3.3 thousand people were involved in nanotechnology activities (both in scientific units and in enterprises). people. Research and development activities in enterprises were carried out by 535 people, which constituted almost half (42.5%) of the total number of people working in nanotechnology in enterprises. (PAP)
