The incident happened on Thursday morning when a collie dog named Whisp fell onto the cliffs of the Northmavine peninsula in the Shetland Islands on Thursday morning and became stuck on a small rocky terrace. His owner could not reach him safely, which required the intervention of lifeguards, the BBC reports.
At around 11:10, HM Coastguard Orkney and Shetland's team began the rescue operation, but the steep slope made access from the sea impossible. The team used special rope equipment for three hours to hoist Whisp safely to the top of the cliff. At 2:00 p.m., the dog was returned to its owner, “remarkably unharmed“.

A representative of the rescue team said: “The two-year-old collie was seen about 30 meters below the top of the cliff on a rocky terrace, which made access from the seaward side impossible. Our crews set up the rope equipment and sent a technician to retrieve Whisp. He he was safely returned to his master – remarkably unharmed – and as seen in our photos, looks very happy to be back with his owner. Fortunately, it all ended with a happy ending for Whisp.”
