A man in New York picked up a baby squirrel, cared for it for 8 months, and then tried to release it back onto the street, but it didn’t work. The little squirrel Peanut was not ready for independent life, so he was left at home. The man created a page for him on social networks, more than 500 thousand users subscribed to it.
Along with the squirrel, a raccoon named Fred lived in the house. After several anonymous complaints, police came to the house without a search warrant and seized Peanut and Fred – it is prohibited in the state to keep wild animals at home without a special license.
During the seizure, the squirrel bit one of the department employees. It was decided to euthanize both pets to “prevent rabies.” When the man began collecting documents to obtain a license to own pets, it was already too late – the animals were euthanized two days later.
The test for the disease was negative: Peanut and Fred did not pose a danger to people. The owner of the animals, Mark Longo, said that he was not surprised by the results of the study, since he lived with his pets side by side for several years.
