What does the compromise regarding government financing assume?
Wednesday was the 43rd day of the longest shutdown in U.S. history. As a result, food stamps for millions of Americans are in question, federal workers are working without pay or furloughed, thousands of flights have been canceled since Friday and passengers are facing delays.
What does the compromise involve?
Trump told reporters on Monday that he supports the compromise reached on government financing. “We have the support of enough Democrats. We will be opening our country soon, he said. He also assessed that the leader of the opposition in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, went “too far” in the fight over government financing.
A group of moderate senators faces criticism from Schumer and colleagues. Chris Murphy assessed that this is a gift for Republicans and Trump himself. Disappointment with the decision of the eight was also expressed by, among others: Bernie Sanders and Richard Blumenthal.
The compromise reached assumes the extension of government financing until the end of January, the reversal of mass layoffs of federal employees that occurred after October 1, and a guarantee of payment of salaries to employees who did not receive them due to the shutdown.
The compromise also includes a promise to hold a vote on restoring health insurance subsidies, but does not guarantee that such subsidies will be provided, which is what Democrats fought for primarily.
