A few days ago, USR president Dominic Fritz, who submitted the file for Romanian citizenship, said that many of the questions he should know the answer to during the citizenship interview would be difficult for a Romanian as well. Among the examples given was the requirement to mention two Dacian deities. After the interview that took place on Wednesday, Fritz said that this was one of the questions that failed him.

“First I had to write an article from the Constitution after dictation, to see if I knew how to write. Then I had to read a few sentences from a story and then I extracted 12 of the 400 questions I told about,” the USR leader said in a post on Facebook.

He was also asked to say who Basarab I was and what is the capital of Romania. “Then this question actually dropped: List two Dacian deities and I knew of Zalmoxis!” continued Dominic Fritz.

He also said that he had to explain a saying – “I feel sorry for you, but my heart breaks for me” – and he had to recite the Romanian anthem.

“I think I did well. It was quite a pleasant experience and I will find out the result soon,” Fritz added.

The questions Fritz had to study for

The president of USR and the mayor of Timișoara, Dominic Fritz, presented on Thursday evening, on his Facebook page, a series of questions that are asked at the interview for obtaining Romanian citizenship, for which he is preparing.

The mayor of Timișoara says that he submitted his file for obtaining Romanian citizenship over a year ago and has a list of about 400 questions for which he must prepare.

“'Fritz offends the Romanians'. That was a headline in a big online publication. Why? Because I said I was preparing for the interview to take Romanian citizenship and many of the questions I have to prepare for are so difficult that I think many Romanians would not be able to answer them,” Fritz said in a video on his Facebook page.

According to the mayor, the questions are from history, geography, culture and the Constitution of Romania. “I brought all the questions here. So there are four categories, there are about 400 questions about the Romanian Constitution, about history, about geography and about Romanian culture and civilization.”

Next, Fritz exemplified some of them:

“List two Dacian deities. List the most important Greek colonies on the Black Sea. What do you know about higher education in the Romanian provinces? Three examples of cities in the Romanian country in the Middle Ages,” said Fritz. “What is the Public Ministry? I know, do you too? List two compositions by George Enescu. I really know the answer to that (…) And after that there are a few easy ones. What is the martișor? What do you know about the Star of Bucharest? What do you know about the wooden sculpture from Maramureș?”, exemplifies Fritz.

Dominic Fritz, originally from Germany, is on his second term as mayor of Timisoara. The mayor submitted the file for Romanian citizenship in July 2024.
