Nicușor Dan was asked, during a press conference, when he will appoint a councilor for Education. The head of state conveyed that Sorin Costreie will be appointed to this position “probably this week”according to Edupedu.ro.
“Yes, you're right, I said two months, two months have passed, I haven't done what I said I would do. Councilor we will probably appoint this week, by decree, for Education. Mr. Costreie will be. And as soon as his lordship is appointed councilor for Education, he will contact the unions, he will contact the ministry, he will ask each of these two parties for relevant data, for example, how much the number of people paid by the hour has decreased, how many teachers do not cover exactly the discipline for which they are… well, all the data that the unions or the ministry considers relevant. And we will have a discussion with the data on the table to see where we are”said Nicușor Dan.
Who is Sorin Costreie?
Sorin Costreie, professor at the University of Bucharest – Faculty of Philosophy, is currently an honorary adviser for higher education in the cabinet of the Minister of Education and Research, Daniel David.
He was in the team of the current minister from the beginning of the first term and remained even after the formation of the new government, in which Daniel David fully supported the austerity measures that hit education, measures adopted by the Bolojan government without explanations and arguments based on data.
According to his own CV, he was an adviser on education to the prime ministers between February 2020 and June 2023. During this period, the government was led by the liberals Ludovic Orban, Florin Cîțu, Nicolae Ciucă and, for a few days, Cătălin Predoiu. He left the position when the government was taken over by Marcel Ciolacu. Currently, the advisor on education to Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, also liberal, is Luciana Antoci.
He was an adviser to Prime Minister Ciucă and appeared alongside the representatives of the PSD-PNL coalition, including during the period in which he was delaying a government response regarding salaries, at the moment when the teachers launched, in 2023, the largest teacher strike of the last decade and a half. Finally, the government accepted the raises demanded by the teachers.
In the past, he held several leadership positions in the university environment, currently being president of the European university network UNICA (from 2023). In 2019, he was also appointed responsible for institutional coordination in the CIVIS European university alliance, at the University of Bucharest level.
