The Ukrainian army announced on Tuesday that it had withdrawn from five villages in the Zaporozhye region in southern Ukraine, after intense fighting with Russian forces, dpa reports, according to Agerpres.
North-east of the city of Huliaipole, fighting continues between Ukrainians and Russians for the villages of Yablukove, Rivnopilia and Sodolke, Army Group South reported on Facebook.
The order to withdraw was given after the “de facto destruction of all shelters and fortifications” with artillery strikes.
Military observers had already reported a Russian breakthrough in that section of the front, and the Russian military claimed to have captured several targets.
Ukraine has been resisting the Russian invasion for over three and a half years. Especially in the eastern Kharkiv and Donetsk regions, Ukrainian forces have been slowly but steadily withdrawing for several months under pressure from Russia.
