A few days ago, Nicola Canestrini, the lawyer of the Ukrainian Serhiy K., informed that his client has been on a hunger strike since October 31. As he added, K. demands respect for fundamental rights. They concern appropriate nutrition in line with his health, decent conditions of detention and the same treatment as other prisoners, especially in matters related to family visits and access to information.

On October 27, the court of appeal in Bologna agreed to hand over to the German justice system a 49-year-old Ukrainian citizen suspected of attacking the Nord Stream gas pipeline in 2022.

The Ukrainian, a former military man, was arrested on the basis of a European arrest warrant in August near Rimini, where he was on vacation with his family. He claimed that he had nothing to do with the sabotage and was in Ukraine at the time.

In the following months, subsequent Italian courts agreed to hand over the man to Germany, which wants to bring him to trial. The Italian Supreme Court (Cassation) then blocked the approval previously given by the appellate court and sent the case back for further consideration.

The Bologna court agreed for the second time to hand over the Ukrainian to Germany, and attorney Canestrini announced he would appeal this decision again in the Italian Supreme Court.

German media reported earlier that K. was the organizer of the attack on the Russian-German Nord Stream, and not – as was believed – one of the coordinators of this operation. According to the German prosecutor's office, the Ukrainian and his companions used a yacht that sailed from the port of Rostock for their operation. They rented it in Germany on the basis of false identity documents and with the help of intermediaries.

Investigators claim that divers attached at least four explosives to the threads of the Nord Stream gas pipeline. Later, they were to be picked up by the driver and taken to Ukraine.
