Republican US President Donald Trump on Thursday criticized Democrat Nancy Pelosi, who he said “did the country a great service” by deciding to retire when her current term in the House of Representatives ends in early 2027, The Hill reports.

“I think she's an evil woman. I'm glad she's retiring. I think she did the country a great service by retiring,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked about the California Democrat's announcement.

“I think she's been a huge burden,” the Republican leader continued. “She is an evil woman who did a poor job that cost our country a lot in damage and reputation (…). She was terrible,” he added.

Nancy Pelosi will retire from Congress at the end of her term

Donald Trump's remarks came as Nancy Pelosi, the first and only woman to serve as speaker of the United States House of Representatives and one of the most influential figures in the Democratic Party for decades, announced on Thursday that she would not run for another term, according to CNN.

“I tell my colleagues in the House all the time: No matter what title I've been given—speaker, leader, caucus leader—there has been no greater honor for me than to sit on the floor of the House and say, “I speak for the people of San Francisco.'' That's why I want you, my fellow citizens of San Francisco, to be the first to know. I will not be running for re-election to Congress,” Pelosi, 85, said Thursday in a wide-ranging video message to the city she has represented in Washington for nearly 40 years.

She made public her decision to retire two days after one of the Democratic Party's major political victories in recent years, in Tuesday's multi-state elections.
