Bridge on the A4 motorway in Germany is at risk. The closure will paralyze transit

Wiehltalbrücke is one of the most important points on the German A4 motorway, connecting east and west Europe. Its closure would mean huge difficulties for international transport, including many hours of delays and increased costs for carriers.

As Trans.info explains, despite the restrictions introduced in December 2024, trucks exceeding 44 tons still enter the bridge, which is strictly prohibited.
Additionally, most drivers do not keep the mandatory distance of 50 meters, which causes the structure to be overloaded. Daily stress exceeds the threshold and additional pressures can lead to disaster.

The driving style of drivers who cross the bridge almost bumper to bumper causes daily overload of the structure. Additional peak pressures could further accelerate the deterioration of the bridge, posing a serious threat to safety and traffic flow on one of the most important transit routes in Germany.
The bridge on the German A4 is at the end of its strength. Truck drivers may cause it to close
The scale of the problem with the crossing is very serious. So much so that – as reported by Trans.info – complete closure of the bridge was already considered. Such a decision could paralyze the region's logistics and seriously disrupt traffic on the east-west route.
The authorities emphasize that detours of the bridge, diversion of traffic to populated areas, delays lasting many hours and increasing costs for carriers would be inevitable.

Due to the critical situation of the bridge on the A4, German services emphasize that the bridge must remain passable until strengthening and renovation works begin. According to representatives of the highway operator – Autobahn GmbH – only strict adherence to the rules by drivers will avoid closing the bridge before the planned renovation.
