UK supplies Ukraine with thousands of 'Octopus' interceptor drones

Britain is significantly expanding its support for Ukraine to strengthen its air defenses, with plans to supply thousands of new interceptor drones as well as hundreds of missiles.

British Defense Secretary John Healey has announced a joint program for the production of a new interceptor drone called “Octopus”, UK Defense Journal reports. This aid comes as Ukraine prepares for increased Russian airstrikes this winter.

The package is of strategic importance in that it provides Ukraine with an effective means of countering drones – economical in terms of cost and substantial in volume – to protect critical infrastructure and allowing the country to retain fewer and more expensive anti-aircraft missiles.

The UK is to produce thousands of Octopus interceptor drones as part of an “unprecedented joint programme”, to be delivered to Ukraine on a monthly basis.

British Defense Secretary John Healey said the new aid package is a response to Russia's intensifying attacks on Ukraine's civilian and energy infrastructure.

“Putin's aerial bombardment of Ukraine is cynical, illegal and targeting civilians.”

Britain also delivered other essential air defense equipment at an accelerated pace. Healey confirmed that more than 200,000 anti-aircraft munitions as well as “hundreds of air-to-air missiles” were delivered to Kiev this fall.

The support also includes the new “Gravehawk” anti-aircraft system, jointly funded by the UK and Denmark, which has already been tested in Ukraine.

In June, Britain committed to providing 350 ASRAAM missiles; designed for air-to-air use, they were quickly adapted by British engineers to be ground-launched using the UK-developed RAVEN mobile air defense system.

By June 2025, Ukraine had already operationally deployed eight Raven systems, with another five to be delivered in the coming period. The package, worth £70m, was financed using interest generated by frozen Russian assets.

A layered defense system

The combination of new systems gives Ukraine a layered air defense network. The “Octopus” drones, which will be available in high volume and at low cost, together with systems such as “Gravehawk” and “Raven”, are designed to intercept mass attacks with Shahed-type drones.

Such an air shield may prove vital to protecting Ukraine's power grid ahead of winter.

By having these systems against drone swarm attacks, Ukraine has the opportunity to spare more advanced and expensive missiles, such as the US-supplied Patriot, for use against Russian ballistic and cruise missiles.

UK military aid to Ukraine stands at £4.5 billion this year.

Ukraine receives a new batch of Storm Shadow missiles

Britain has transferred additional Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine, bolstering its long-range strike capability against targets inside Russia, Bloomberg reported on November 3, citing unnamed sources.

UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles have been repeatedly used by Ukrainian forces to attack targets on Russian soil. In late October, Ukraine targeted the Briansk chemical plant, about 110 kilometers from Ukraine.

An undisclosed number of missiles were delivered to replenish Ukraine's arsenal ahead of winter, when Russia is expected to step up its attacks, the source told Bloomberg.

Storm Shadow missiles can hit at 250 and 560 kilometers. Equipped with sophisticated guidance systems, they fly at low altitudes and high speeds, making them extremely efficient.
