Zakharova's words caused an immediate reaction from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Russian ambassador in Rome, Alexei Paramonov, was summoned to the ministry to receive a diplomatic note on this matter.
Anonymous sources in the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, quoted by the ANSA news agency, speak of “despicable and disturbing words that confirm the abyss of vulgarity to which the Russian power elite has sunk.”
“No one in Italy, really no one, would think of rejoicing or taking political advantage of an accident, a tragedy that still affects us all as a nation,” the ministry said. “As Italy, we will always express solidarity and friendship towards the weakest, those in difficult situations, those under attack. That is why we support the Ukrainian people. Because we are Italians,” it added.
