Alexander Gorban was born in 1952 in Omsk, studied at the Novosibirsk physical school, but was expelled from the university for organizing a student speech against political processes. After that, he graduated from a professional and changed several professions before returning to science and in 1972 to graduate from the Mathematics Department of the Omsk Pedagogical Institute.

Later, Alexander Gorban taught for many years at Krasnoyarsk universities, which later became part of the Siberian Federal District, and subsequently continued to cooperate with Siberian scientists as a scientific consultant. It was in Krasnoyarsk that he created and headed the first department of neurocomputer systems on the basis of the Krasnoyarsk State Technical University.

He also headed the department at the Institute for Computing Modeling SB RAS. In addition, Gorban was one of the creators of the Krasnoyarsk Regional Fund of Science and the founder of several physical and mathematical schools for gifted children.

Working in Krasnoyarsk, the scientist created several new scientific areas, gaining worldwide fame due to his research in the field of physical and biological kinetics, the theory of dynamic systems and neural networks. He worked at invitation to the leading mathematical institutions of the United States and Europe. In 2004, Alexander Gorban accepted the proposal of the University of Leicester and moved to the UK, where he headed the Center for Mathematical Modeling for 20 years. It is included in a thousand most cited scientists of Russian origin.

In recent years, he led the joint laboratory of the Central University and the Airi Artificial Intelligence Institute in Moscow, where he read courses, led a scientific seminar and prepared a new generation of researchers.

Farewell to Alexander Nikolayevich Gorban will be held on September 23 at 17:00 in the Central Design Bureau No. 2 named after N. A. Semashko in Moscow.
