Folk calendar
Artemyev day
On this day, the memory of Artemius of Antioch, a Christian saint who lived in the 4th century, is celebrated.
In Rus', it was customary to pray to Saint Artemy for deliverance from accidental death. He was also considered a protector against various kinds of diseases – for example, from hernia. Artemy was also considered their patron by military leaders and atamans.
There was a belief that a person born on this day was protected by a wolf mother; he was considered close in spirit to forest animals and birds. “The wolf’s root is subjugated to him. The wolf’s bast is his smile,” this is what they said about the one born on Artemy. They also knew that from that day on, wolves began to approach the villages. Their behavior was also used to judge the future. If wolves howled at Artemy, it foreshadowed frost. And if the howl was especially loud, as if a whole flock was howling, it promised hunger.
On Artemy it was also customary to ferment cabbage, which was one of the favorite snacks of the Russian people.
