“For the first time since the beginning of full-scale aggression, Ukraine has extradited a Russian soldier to a foreign country, Lithuania, for the purpose of conducting real criminal proceedings for war crimes committed,” Ukrainian Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said on Telegram.

The man – a sailor who served in the Russian military police – was captured by the Ukrainian army in the Zaporizhia Oblast, near the southern village of Robotyne.

“He participated in the illegal detention, torture and inhumane treatment of civilians and prisoners of war,” Kravchenko further wrote. As the prosecutor added, one of the Russian's victims was a Lithuanian citizen.

Kravchenko called the transfer of the Russian to Lithuania “a historic and important event for the entire international justice system.” The court in Vilnius announced that the man would be imprisoned for at least three months while awaiting trial. He faces life imprisonment.
