Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stopped in Halifax, Canada, on Saturday for talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney and several European leaders, before heading to Florida on Sunday to meet with his US counterpart, Donald Trump.

In Canada, the Ukrainian leader was received by Prime Minister Mark Carney, who emphasized that “a willing Russia” is needed to achieve peace in Ukraine, reports AFP.

“We have the conditions … for a just and lasting peace, but that requires a willing Russia, and the barbarity we saw overnight … shows how important it is to stand with Canada,” Carney said.

The Canadian leader announced additional economic aid worth 2.5 billion Canadian dollars (1.8 billion US dollars) for Ukraine. Mark Carney said they would help unlock international funding “to begin this process of rebuilding” the country after nearly four years of war.

Zelenskiy and Carney were to hold a video conference call with a number of European leaders ahead of the Ukrainian president's meeting with the US president on Sunday in Florida.

The Ukrainian leader said the 10-hour bombardment, which took place overnight and targeted Kiev and surrounding regions, was “Russia's response to our peace efforts”.

“And this really showed that Putin does not want peace, and we want peace,” he added.
