Tottenham are coming off the exit from the League Cup

Thomas Frank's side have made a good start to the new Premier League season. After the first nine legs, tonight's hosts occupy the bottom step of the podium in England with 17 points, five lengths behind leaders Arsenal.

Spurs also have the best attack in the league so far, with 17 goals scored, the same as Manchester City and Chelsea – today's opponents.

From a defensive point of view, Tottenham is not bad either. Only 7 goals were scored by the group from the north of London in the current edition of the Premier League, thus occupying the second place in this chapter. Only Arsenal is better, with 3.

In the Champions League, Spurs are unbeaten after their first three matches. The narrow win at home with Villarreal (1-0) and the two away draws (2-2 with Bodo/Glimt, respectively 0-0 with AS Monaco) ranks Tottenham in 15th place in the single group, playoff position.

In the middle of the week, however, came the first big disappointment for Thomas Frank's students. Spurs lost to St. James's Park with Newcastle, 0-2 in the English League Cup, and thus, the London formation was eliminated from the competition, missing out on probably the most accessible trophy that they could get this season.

Chelsea cannot find consistency in this season debut

On the other hand, the world club champions have a below-expected start to the season in the Premier League. At the moment, the Stamford Bridge side are only 9th in the English table, with just 14 accumulated from a possible maximum of 27.

In the previous round, although they were in the lead, Enzo Maresca's students lost at home to the newly promoted Sunderland, score 1-2, thus recording their third domestic defeat in the current season.

However, in the other competitions, the “blues” recorded gratifying results. In the Champions League, after the failure at the Allianz Arena in the first leg, 1-3 against Bayern Munich, Chelsea ticked off two consecutive victories, both at home (1-0 against Benfica, respectively a decisive 5-1 against Ajax).

In addition, today's visitors also won the League Cup thriller at the Molineux Stadium, 4-3 with Wolverhampton, a game that Enzo Maresca's men finished with 10 men after Liam Delap was sent off.

However, this match was not the only one in the last period that the Chelsea players ended in numerical inferiority. Of the last nine duels played in all competitions, the line-up at Stamford Bridge has actually finished only three, something that worries the fans of the club, but also Maresca, because most of the eliminations have been due to silly gestures by the players.
