PSD MP Mihai Fifor conveyed, on Friday, to Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, called on Monday at “Prime Minister's Hour” to explain the resizing of US troops in Romania, that “things are as simple as possible”, and the Parliament exercises control over the Government, according to the Constitution.
Fifor emphasized that the presence of the prime minister is not optional. “Don't be afraid — it's not a censure motion. It's just a natural requirement for transparency and responsibility,” the deputy also said, according to News.ro.
“We already know that Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan does not give too much money to the Romanian Parliament, unfortunately. He is used to governing by assuming responsibility and by avoiding the most important institution in a democracy – the one that represents the will of the people, expressed by voting. But this time, I sincerely hope that he will not run away from dialogue again and will honor the request of the PSD Parliamentary Group in the Chamber of Deputies to appear before the Parliament”, wrote Fifor in a post on Facebook.
“Things are as simple as possible, Mr. Prime Minister: Parliament exercises control over the Government, according to the Romanian Constitution. And your presence is not optional. You should know at least this much… And don't be afraid — it's not a motion of censure. It's just a natural requirement for transparency and responsibility,” the social-democratic deputy also points out.
The social democrat added that the Parliament and, implicitly, the Romanians “have the right to know what steps the Bolojan Government has taken to strengthen the bilateral relationship with the United States, in the context of the Pentagon's decision to scale back the American military presence in Europe”.
“Romania can no longer afford ambiguities and must position itself firmly – within NATO, within the European Union and, above all, in relation to the American strategic partner. In a period when the balances are changing, Romania must remain a predictable, active and respected ally, not a state that learns from the press about major decisions that directly concern it,” he continued.
“This is what it's about, Mr. Bolojan. About transparency, responsibility and strategic vision. Nothing will happen to you if you come to the Parliament. You are, after all, our colleague. But if you avoid dialogue again, then yes – something serious is happening. The bond of trust between the Government and the citizens you claim to represent is breaking,” added Mihai Fifor.
PSD-AUR alliance in Parliament: Bolojan, called to give explanations
PSD called on Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan in Parliament on Monday, November 3, during “Prime Minister's Hour”. The request was approved on Thursday by the leadership of the Chamber of Deputies, led by Sorin Grindeanu, with the vote of PSD and AUR.
The reason is related to the Government's reaction to the US decision to withdraw part of the military from Romania, according to the document submitted by the Social Democrats.
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated, on Thursday evening, in an interview on Antena 1, that the announcement regarding the withdrawal of American troops from the Mihail Kogălniceanu base was postponed for two days by the authorities in Bucharest because it was agreed with the American side for it to make the announcement for the first time during a briefing in the Defense Committee of the House of Representatives.
The Head of Government explained that a press conference was already prepared at the Ministry of Defense in Bucharest to make the announcement, but the information “leaked” a day earlier, being published in the Ukrainian press.
Also on Thursday, Ilie Bolojan said that he has not yet received the invitation to be present in Parliament to give explanations about the withdrawal of American troops from Romania and that he will give an answer on Friday – whether or not he will participate in the “Prime Minister's Hour” in the Chamber of Deputies.
