It is important not only to collect garlic on time, but also to provide it with optimal storage conditions so that the heads do not spoil and remain firm until spring. An experienced summer resident, author of the Zen channel “In Valentine’s Garden” (16+), shared simple but very effective tips that will help preserve the harvest without loss.
How to properly store garlic
Do not shake off the soil from the garlic heads immediately after harvesting or remove the husks. It is important to avoid moisture, because garlic is very sensitive to dampness, so it should not be stored in the refrigerator or in damp basements.
Ideal storage conditions are a temperature of about +15°C and a dry, well-ventilated room. It is best to store garlic in nets, wicker baskets or on wooden racks. Forget about plastic bags: they don't allow air to pass through, causing the garlic to rot.
Check the garlic every few weeks and remove any soft or rotten heads. This will avoid the spread of rot to healthy cloves and preserve the bulk of the harvest.
To prevent mold, place sprigs of mint or sage between the garlic heads. These plants secrete phytoncides – natural substances that inhibit the development of fungal spores and repel thrips – dangerous pests that damage garlic and onions during storage.
