The Romanian Gendarmerie announced on Friday that the position of director general of the General Directorate of Gendarmerie of Bucharest Municipality, vacant since the end of August, will be filled from November 1 by Colonel Marius Cezar Toma. The appointment comes a day after the event commemorating the victims in Colectiv, where one of the organizers was fined by the gendarmes for “exceeding the commemoration hour”.

The gendarmerie says that the position of director general in the Capital Gendarmerie has been vacant since August.

“We inform you that, starting on November 1, Colonel Toma Marius Cezar is empowered to the position of director general of the General Directorate of Gendarmerie of the Municipality of Bucharest. We specify the fact that this position was temporarily vacant from the end of August, as a result of the fact that Mr. Major General Cătălin Stegăroiu was empowered to the position of first deputy inspector general of the Romanian Gendarmerie”, the press release states friday

Colonel Marius Cezar Toma held the position of chief inspector of the Argeș County Gendarmerie Inspectorate.

The Romanian Gendarmerie claims that “the decision to empower him was taken following an analysis process started previously, a process that aimed to evaluate several managerial aspects, in order to ensure the continuity of the act of command at the level of the Capital Gendarmerie”.

The fine received by one of the organizers of the commemoration of the victims from the Collective

Marian Rădună, representative of the MEA Association and one of the organizers of the march commemorating the tragedy in the Colectiv club, was fined Thursday evening by the Romanian Gendarmerie with 3,000 lei for “exceeding the commemoration hour”, when there were still 25 people in the square, standing vigil with candles.

Contacted by HotNews, Rădună said that the sanction is illegal and that he will challenge it in court.

On Friday morning, the Romanian Gendarmerie announced that checks will be made to assess whether the sanction applied to Marian Rădună “was proportionate, justified and in accordance with both the letter and the spirit of the law”.

The head of the Romanian Gendarmerie, Alin Mastan, also had a reaction, stating that he regretted the fine. He said, however, that, “from a legal point of view, there were elements that, formally, could constitute the basis for the application of a contraventional sanction”.

“First of all, I want to publicly apologize for the incident. Although we are talking about a singular situation, it is a regrettable moment, especially since the event had a deep emotional and symbolic character”, declared Alin Mastan.
